Relocating and Medicare

relocating

There are a few crucial steps you should take to ensure a smooth transition to your new home or area, and ensure that you have access to the healthcare providers you need. Following are a few suggestions on preparing properly.

If this list is daunting… consider utilizing the services of a Medicare Certified Advisor, who can interview you and make appropriate recommendations.

1.       Update your address: Notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) of your new address. This can be done by visiting the SSA website, (ssa.gov), calling their toll-free number, or visiting your local Social Security office. It’s important to keep your address up to date to ensure you receive important Medicare correspondence and benefits.

2.       Check for changes in coverage: Different states may offer variations in Medicare Advantage plans and prescription drug plans. Research the available plans in your new state to see if there are any changes or additional options you may want to consider.

3.       Determine network coverage: If you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and plan to continue using your existing healthcare providers, check whether they accept Medicare assignment in your new state. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, verify if your new location is within the plan’s service area and if your preferred providers are in-network.

4.       Review Medicare Supplement plans: If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, these plans are standardized but may have different costs depending on your new location. Consider reviewing available Medigap plans in your new state to ensure you have the most suitable coverage and cost options. You might find that you can save big dollars on your premium, while keeping the exact same coverage.

5.       Understand Special Enrollment Periods: Moving to a new state qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that allows you to make changes to your Medicare coverage. This SEP generally lasts for two full months following your move. During this time, you can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan or vice versa, switch between Medicare Advantage plans, or join or switch Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.

6.       Notify your current Medicare plan: If you have a Medicare Advantage plan or a standalone Part D prescription drug plan, inform your plan about your move. They can provide guidance on your options and help ensure a seamless transition.

7.       Consider seeking assistance: If you need assistance navigating the process or have specific questions related to your Medicare coverage when relocating, consider contacting me for help. There is not charge for this service and as a Medicare Certified Advisor, I am extremely thorough in my research.

It’s important to be proactive and initiate the necessary steps to update your information and evaluate your Medicare coverage options when relocating to a new state. This will help ensure that your coverage remains uninterrupted and meets your healthcare needs in your new location.

Evaluating your plan is also important to do annually, to make certain you are receiving all of the benefits available to you.
